Today the Old Town of Alcudia, located just under two kilometres from its Port is one of the most beautiful towns on the island, including a matrix so varied that there is something of interest for everyone. It was the Phoenicians and Greeks who settled here first and later by the Romans in the 2nd century, who proclaimed Alcudia the capital of the island. However many of the historical sites found here are dated from around 1300 AD onwards, which include old homes, windows, churches, gates of Xara and Palma, ancient city of Pollentia and coat of arms.
To enter the old town you have to walk through the portals (gates) of the ancient and impressive Moorish fort walls that surround the nucleus of the town. The walls are not Roman as some think, but there are remains of the original Roman Capital ‘Pollentia’ just outside the town walls. There is also a small Roman amphitheatre, the smallest in all of Spain. North of the wall is a bullring, although most fights are mock fights. The walled town is beautiful, its narrow streets (most for foot traffic only) are lined with interesting shops, packed with traditional local goods, and with plenty of intriguing squares and charming bars and restaurants of excellent quality to eat or have a refreshing aperitif.
Further north and west are many coves ideal for sunbathing or snorkelling. Every Sunday and Tuesday there is a market in the old town. Alcudia only 45 minutes from Palma Airport is very well worth getting to know. The municipality of Alcudia also encompasses the coastal areas of the Port, Alcanada, Barcares, Bonaire, Mal Pas, and Playa de Los Franceses. The principal countryside areas are Son Fe, Son Rotger, and Can Segue.
